Maui Pāʻia Youth and Cultural Center

Sustainable revitalization of a cherished Maui park and youth cultural center, including a 6,500sf new build plus restorative landscape. The project targeted climate-positive design and 100% renewable energy. The initiative was based on the fact that land and water come first - we all depend on them; our well-being is intricately tied to their preservation. The building was designed to be resilient to intensifying storms for 100+ years, and the landscape to catalyze the enhancement and beautification of the entire park, extending beyond the confines of the cultural center.

Implemented strategies were rooted in proactive environmental stewardship, including the expansion of dune restoration efforts, the cultivation of native and sacred traditional plants, and the preservation of beach access for a diverse range of park users. The building itself was designed to withstand the challenges of flooding and salt air, showcasing the dedication to longevity and adaptability. By leveraging the structure to inspire the youth to become stewards of both the land and the community, a future is enabled in which the park serves as a beacon of sustainability, inclusivity, and enduring beauty; a lasting legacy for generations to come.
